Brian Falls
VP Development
Palisades Capital Partners
Brian Falls
Brian Falls has 20-years of development experience in the City of Los Angeles having worked on large mixed-use projects ranging from Playa Vista, The Bloc, NBC Universal and Campus El Segundo to small infill developments in Hollywood. Currently, Brian is the Vice President of Development with Palisades, a design-driven real estate development and investment firm based in L.A. Palisades has 8 projects under development including 1111 Sunset, a 5.5-acre residential, hotel, retail and office complex designed by SOM in collaboration with Kengo Kuma, Natoma Architects and Field Operations.
Brian has a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering with a minor in Architecture (Building Science) from the University of Southern California and a Master of Real Estate Development from USC’s Price School of Public Policy. He is active with the Central City Association, Urban Land Institute, and Downtown Streetcar as well as numerous civic groups.
Los Angeles is in a state of change and development throughout key areas is the norm. The fabric of Los Angeles poses interesting challenges for the changing needs of housing with its planning rooted in post-war, suburban ideals. The natural response to infill, and the rising costs of housing are realities whichraises questions for the “right” strategies in residential planning, design, and construction. Two DTLA projects which exemplify the need to build taller, will be presented from the perspective of the developer and architect. Each project engaged the challenges and constraints of the context by rethinking project typology and engaging the public. The initial planning to address transit, connections between indoor & outdoor conditions, and the rethinking of urban form lead to innovative solutions.
Hear what the drivers were that shaped these projects, and the design responses to the city at large.

James Warton
Vice President | Computational Designer
HKS
James Warton
Throughout his career in architecture, James Warton has maintained an interest in cutting-edge manufacturing processes and developed specialized concentration in high-resolution additive processes. He is currently focused on highly articulated metal structures and direct-to-fabrication methodologies. Within HKS | LINE his responsibilities encompass a broad range of activities that span from preliminary analysis and conceptual design through the design development and documentation of complex architectural systems. His role demonstrates proactive engagement with practice leading to implementation of additively manufactured building-scale assemblies. These efforts represent a cumulative contribution to professional and academic discourse surrounding computational design and digital fabrication, as well as serve to further application and advancement in real-world construction scenarios while expanding the field’s awareness of emerging technologies.
The façade is the visually expressive and performative outer layer of the buildings we design, engineer, and construct. Building enclosures must provide performance both internally and externally, but this is only a minimum consideration. The way in which we produce and deliver our work is informed by technology, and the development of innovative approaches to how we utilize it.
Inherent to the making of architecture is the notion of craft – traditionally viewed as the presence of the “hand” in the making of work. It can be said that technology is taking the place of what was once analog, but simultaneously creating new opportunities. There is a new measure of what is impressive construction or technique. The sheer amounts of data that we can process or analyze, and the massive increases in productivity has created new opportunities in how we design and deliver facades.
The panelists are industry leaders with focus within the fields of design, design technology, and enclosure engineering. Presentations by each panelist will focus on how innovation, technology, & craft are key considerations in the delivery of complex facades. The session will conclude with a panel discussion and an audience-based question and answer.
